Comment to Congressional Leaders
U.S. House of Representatives’ Committee on Education and Labor is accepting input and suggestions about reauthorizing the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), under which SES is currently provided. You can find out more specifics on the
ESEA Blog
If you email this committee, here are a few ideas you may want to include:
- The school turnaround model that is currently popular is relatively slow. In many cases, it may take years for schools to improve. By that time, current students will have graduated or dropped-out. So, students in a failing school need faster-impact services like SES tutoring.
- Parents know their kids better than anyone else, and are well-equipped to make many educational decisions. By empowering parents to choose which tutoring provider they want for their child, SES adds an important advocate to the process of school improvement. Also, it does this without changing the structure or viability of the school.
- SES tutoring providers are able to bring in new methods and operate flexibly, much like a charter school. And, because they must compete to be selected by parents, they tend to deliver very high results and operate efficiently. Also, they can quickly scale to serve many schools.
